4 Reasons to Have Your Dental Crowns Replaced

4 Reasons to Have Your Dental Crowns Replaced

Dental crowns are both clinically and cosmetically helpful for patients because they protect and preserve your teeth and camouflage a wide range of tooth flaws.

Basically, a crown is a cap shaped like your tooth that covers it, an implant, or a tooth that has been treated with a root canal.

The caring team at Modern Age Dentistry is highly experienced at providing crowns for patients, and Dr. Ali Saeghi discusses the process with you thoroughly when he recommends a crown, addressing all your concerns and questions. He’s committed to offering high-quality ceramic crowns that are comfortable and look just like your real teeth, down to the precise shade.

Why would I need a crown?

Dr. Saeghi recommends a crown for many reasons. Crowns can:

The process for getting a crown is simple and comfortable. First, we take X-rays of your mouth, and Dr. Saeghi evaluates you to make sure that the tooth that will be receiving the crown has no decay or infection. He also checks that your bone and the roots of your tooth are robust enough to support a crown.

Because Dr. Saeghi needs to file your tooth down a bit to create sufficient room for crown placement, he numbs the area around the tooth so you’ll be comfortable, and he files it down. If areas have a gap of some sort, he fills them so the crown will fit properly.

Next, Dr. Saeghi makes an impression of the tooth that’s getting the crown, and the one either below or above it — this will be the basis for the creation of your crown.

We can often perform a crown procedure in a single office visit, but if you need to come back, Dr. Saeghi provides you with a temporary crown. When you return, we numb the treatment area again and Dr. Saeghi places your new crown securely with a special dental cement. He also ensures that it fits perfectly, feels comfortable, and looks excellent.

Top reasons to replace your dental crowns

Dental crowns, when cared for properly, are durable and can last from 5 to 15 years and sometimes longer, but there are instances when they need to be replaced. Here are the main reasons a patient might need to get their crown replaced.

1. Sudden discomfort

Sometimes, when a patient has a crown, they’ll experience pain or sensitivity to hot and cold, which must be looked into. This may be because the crown became cracked, or the tooth underneath may have developed decay, in which case you might need your current crown removed. This would be followed by root canal treatment, after which you would receive the replacement crown.

Another painful problem that requires crown replacement is if the gum around your crown becomes inflamed or infected.

Bacteria can also accumulate and cause your gum to recede, necessitating crown replacement.

Whatever the reason for your crown discomfort, Dr. Saeghi can replace it so you’re comfortable and pain-free once again.

2. Loose or lost crown

A loose or lost crown means, most likely, that the cement used to place it has weakened. This is typically a problem if a crown is nearing the end of its lifespan.

Crown replacement will allow you to “start fresh” and restore your smile’s beauty.

3. Your crown begins to look different from your other teeth

Over time, the color of your crown can change, making it visually incompatible and unnatural looking as compared to the rest of your teeth. A replacement is the solution.

4. Your crown has ‘aged out’

The older your crown gets, the more likely it will need to be replaced. Just like your natural teeth, a crown sustains wear and tear, and after a decade or  more, it’s time to talk to your dentist about replacement.

A dental crown is an ideal solution for many problems, and its benefits include enhancing how your teeth function and helping to make your smile dazzle

Fortunately, taking care of your crown is just like maintaining your natural teeth — be sure to brush twice a day and floss daily.

If you notice any of the signs we’ve talked about affecting a crown you have, it might be time for a replacement. Come into the Modern Age office closest to you for a consultation with Dr. Saeghi.
