Comparing Dentures and Dental Implants

Unfortunately, it’s not just 6-year-olds who are losing teeth. Adults between the ages of 25 and 64 have only an average of 25.5 remaining teeth out of 28 (not counting wisdom teeth, which are often removed in early adulthood). Even more concerning is that 2.2% of adults in that same age group have no teeth remaining.
Decay, periodontitis (gum disease), and traumatic accidents are all reasons for adult tooth loss, but it’s important to understand that a mouth with gaps in it poses a host of problems, including problems chewing and speaking, tooth shifting, bite issues, and bone loss. Missing teeth can even change how you look, since facial sagging and asymmetry can occur.
Dr. Ali Saeghi and the Modern Age Dentistry team are proud to offer two solutions for missing teeth — dental implants and dentures. But, which choice is right for you? We can help you determine the answer to that, while also helping you understand the benefits of each.
Dental implants versus dentures
When Dr. Saeghi discusses the choice between dentures and dental implants, he’ll be sure to explain everything about each option fully and answer all your concerns and questions.
Dentures are a fantastic solution if you’re dealing with widespread decay or gum disease, or if you’re already missing multiple teeth.
As you probably know, dentures are replacement teeth that you can remove. The advantages of dentures include:
- They are easy to insert and remove.
- You can opt for immediate dentures the day your teeth are extracted.
- You can get partial or full dentures.
- Bone-preserving overdentures that are placed atop filed-down teeth are an option.
- They are budget-friendly.
- They are easy to care for — you brush them just like your teeth and soak them.
- Dentures have come a long way — they’re gorgeous and natural looking now.
When you opt for dentures, it’s important to brush your teeth and gums after removing your dentures, which can be soaked in either water or cleansing solution.
Dental implants are man-made implants that act like tooth roots. Dr. Saeghi places the tiny titanium implants in your gums. Once your gums heal, a restoration, like a crown or bridge, is attached to the implant. If you’re considering implants, a high level of gum health and enough bone to hold the implants in place are required.
The advantages of dental implants include:
- They’re permanent, so they don’t move around in your mouth.
- You experience no speech challenges, which can occur with dentures.
- You can eat whatever you like, whereas dentures carry some limitations.
- They are highly durable.
- They require no special care.
- Teeth that surround implants are unaffected.
- They’re natural looking and very comfortable.
When you get a dental implant, the process requires a period of weeks or months. First, Dr. Saeghi places your titanium post (the root implant) in the bone socket of the tooth that’s missing. Time is then needed so the jawbone begins to surround the implant.
When healing is complete, Dr. Saeghi attaches an abutment, or small post, to the top of the root implant. This is what secures your new tooth. Your new tooth is fashioned after the Modern Age team makes a model of your bite, so it’s sure to fit precisely.
Then Dr. Saeghi attaches either a crown or removable denture to your abutment.
The result? An amazingly natural smile! The implant is absolutely undetectable and can last your lifetime with proper care. On average, a crown lasts about 15 years, while a denture can last 7 years or more.
Depending on your needs and dental goals, both dentures and dental implants have lots to offer. Dr. Saeghi can help you select the treatment that will serve you best, depending on your lifestyle, preferences, and other factors.
